First Vigil

Among the flowers and the stones
later fire will appear
and blue lightning will dart out from the water springs
The vocabulary of Nature will find its voice
and will tell its secret
     Now before us,
father, you know everything but have fallen silent
Last night we overcame mountains of pain
and as soon as we saw each other face to face
you closed your eyes and great lights
shone around you. Let our sorrow be
austere and restrained like a standard in battle,
the Beauty that does not yield from itself
either a sword or a pen or kindness or any fruit,
or the serene tenderness of a flower
but let be preserved for us for ever,
a pure and perfect countenance like the sun,
which yesterday in the afternoon was seeking it in the darkness;
it took light from the sun
and enclosed in the palm of its hand,
on whose lines
sail the ships of your soul.
